Dr Mike Ryan links the spread and fatality of covid19 to racism, ethnicity and poor living conditions
Michael Joseph Ryan is an Irish former trauma surgeon and epidemiologist specialising in infectious disease and public health. He is executive director of the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Programme, leading the team responsible for the international containment and treatment of COVID-19.
According to him the coronal virus has only made public the social faractures that alredy exist and which other world organisations need to partner with the W.H.O to ensure their disappearance.
He says the fatality of the disease is not only caused by the disease itself but by an inequitable health care system in the society in which we live.
It should be remembered that in China, Blacks were already stigmatised and given poor health care under the pretext that they are not easily killed by the virus. The Chinese held that it is their resistance that makes them spread the disease to the weak Whites. In the US, reports were given of Blacks dieing after complaining of a racism related discrimination in health treatment. The story of the covid19 is a complicated one as the then American President, Donald Trump initially described the virus as a Chinese virus. The discourse of racism was further revealed when the W.H.O said the vvaccine was going to be tested in Africa whereas Africa was the least affected continents. Blacks therefore saw the initiative as a race orchestrated one.
Dr Mike adds that the spread of the virus has also been caused by the long existing poor health conditions of the society.
